I’ve been asked a few time about PMs on this blog and the short answer is that I don’t think there is any. So therefore I ask the question, would anybody reading this rather me move over to livejournal? I honestly didn’t think anybody would care or want to PM me (or even come over here at that). But if people would prefer it, I would gladly give LiveJournal a try. The only downside is that in order to PM me on there, you’d need to make a LiveJournal account yourself, but that is relatively simple and easy, and I am fairly sure you don’t need to make an account to simply comment and whatnot, so if you do not want to PM, no more effort is required of you than it is here.

Well, let me know. If people are willing to follow me once more, this time over to LiveJournal, I’ll give it a shot.

Men, Liquor, and Smokes

I have very recently begun watching the television show Dexter. Upon watching the first episode, I began an intense viewing session, watching the entire first two seasons in two days. Now I’ve been slowly making my way through the third season the past week. I could go on and on about all the things I love about the show and how great the characters are and how each season brings something new to the table while still remembering what made it so good in the first place.

But I’m not going to do that, instead I am going to talk about the greatest disappointment of this show so far, the character of Debra Morgan, and why she is downright offensive. There will be open spoilers for the first three seasons of Dexter (I’m halfway through season three), so the rest of this post will be “after the jump”.

Debra Morgan is the sister to the main character Dexter, she is an up-and-coming police officer trying to make a name for herself and earn her detective badge. I was initially drawn to her character because of how she was initially presented to us. She acted like she was awkward, headstrong, and obscene and that she didn’t care what anybody thought of her, as she swears with every other word and spares no details for dignity. But that was immediately shown to be a coverup for how she truly felt inside, which was incredibly insecure and nervous about everything, including herself. This was made no clearer than in the early Season One scene where she tries to provide her theory about the Ice Truck Killer to a room full of co-workers and has a near panic attack simply trying to get the theory out and is close to breaking down completely when it is disregarded.

This provides a great set-up for character development as Debra could then slowly show her true face to the world and let people actually get close to who she really is, which would eventually allow her to make true friends and overcome these problems to become a more confident and headstrong person in reality. This would also be a nice parallel for Dexter, as this is something he can never do himself. But that isn’t where Debra’s character goes at all. Instead, the show seems to forget entirely that Debra ever even had a problem and her character literally becomes the annoying bitchy mask she was wearing to protect herself. I’m not sure what went wrong with the writing of her character, but I feel like the Post-Season One Debra (or hell, even the Mid-Season One Debra) is a completely different character than what Debra actually started out as. But Dear God, if only that was the only problem with her character. Sadly, it gets worse.

Now that I am on the third season of this show, I have noticed a pattern. It wasn’t so obvious in the second season, but now it really has become blatant. In keeping with the goal of this post, however, I am going to focus on what that pattern means for Debra. Fortunately for me, it has been parodied quite humorously in this video (along with everything else about the previously mentioned pattern), Dexter in 60 Seconds.

“It’s a new season so meet my new boyfriend”.
Debra’s character didn’t just become the mask she was supposed to be wearing, she also became somebody who lives and breathes for the men she is dating. It is literally the only thing carrying her story forward at all. It’s what the entire character revolves around. She is either madly in love with her new man, upset about something her new man did, or trying to pick up the pieces left over by her old man. It’s gotten downright ridiculous that it is literally the only thing her character does now.

In season three, we’ve got a serial killer on the loose and her brother is struggling to plan his wedding. But what is the only thing Debra cares about? Her stupid weed-smoking boyfriend and “what if he really doesn’t like me?” The scene that finally set me off on this was in Episode 8 of Season 3. She is supposed to be helping her brother pick out his freaking wedding ring. That is kind of a big deal. Yet we soon see she used the entire trip as an excuse to ask Dexter what he thinks about her situation and if her boyfriend was just using her for sex because she was there, and when he doesn’t give her the answer she wants, she freaks out on him and storms off. That is literally all her character is now. A bitchy selfish man-obsessed shell of a character. It’s an insult to what her character started out as, it’s an insult to women in general (and not the first this show has given us, trust me), but most importantly, it’s an insult to the viewer and the fan.

It wouldn’t be so bad if she didn’t start out every season “turning over a new leaf”, which lead me to the title of this post, where at the start of season three she directly says she is “swearing off men, liquor, and smokes”, which comes complete with a new haircut because as we all know short hair on a girl means she isn’t sleeping with men right now. I actually liked it when they did this in the start of Season 2 since it was a smaller part of a bigger picture. The aftermath of her first failed relationship of the show was huge, since he, you know, tried to kill her and was a serial killer and everything. She was shaken up by that and unsure if she was ever going to be able to love and trust another person again. Cue a few episodes later where she is jumping in bed with some FBI Agent.

That. Wouldn’t. Happen. I am downright offended that the solution they came up with to her trust and love issues in Season 2 were “have her date another guy”. Was it really the only thing they could think of? She is almost killed by her serial killer boyfriend, which leaves her a broken and on-edge mess and the solution is “she just needed to get laid”? Fuck you, show. Fuck you. But then they go and do it AGAIN in Season 3 when she gets her edgy new “no men please” haircut. Only to have her immediately fall for another guy because at this point it seems to be all her character is good for.

Granted, I’ve still got the rest of Season 3 and all of 4 and 5 to go, and I assume she gets her Detective Shield somewhere down the line. But at this point I doubt they will ever fix her character… and even if they do, it may wind up being too little and too late.

Regarding Fate/Zero

Fate/Zero is a prequel to the visual novel Fate/stay night. It is being adapted into an anime by ufotable, it is going to be awesome, and I am going to post things about it and how awesome it is. This is me doing that.

Rebirth

Well, this went absolutely nowhere. However, I return to it now. Due to recent events I have decided I need a place to be my dumping grounds FOR REAL THIS TIME THOUGH. I’ve got nowhere else, really, so I decided to revive and reimagine this blog. I’ve needed a place like that for awhile, actually. Some place for me to vent my feelings/personal issues and also update on upcoming anime and games I am excited about, complete with fangasms. And since it’ll be my own blog, it won’t bother people or anything. Nobody will probably even read it. But I’ll have a place to put it, at least.

So, if you’ve decided to read this, then you probably already know me and you probably know what to expect from this. I’ll probably post things like an update on Fate/Zero or Persona 4 or something, and when I am watching an anime or playing a game I will update with my thoughts on the most recent episode or whatever. But I’m also going to be personal on it too. If something is happening irl, I may talk about it. On a certain forum, I’ve always felt the need to play an act and put up some facade that eventually consumed and destroyed my time there. On here, I’m probably going to be more open and real and true to myself and how I really feel. If that sort of thing makes you uncomfortable, then don’t bother reading my posts here.

Well, I’m not quite sure how I’m going to go about posting on here. I guess I’ll figure it out as I go along.

Time Wasting Chapter

I just spent 2 hours in Mass Effect standing in the same spot using these 4 skills over and over again (waiting more then half of the time for them to recharge) and I did it all for 4 achievements that mean absolutely nothing. I did this rather than continuing to play the actual game (granted, it IS my 2nd time).

This is just an early tossed together look for this blog based purely on my choice of name. I don’t normally go for dark themes, so I fully intend to change every single bit of this once I stop being lazy about it.

I really wish I didn’t have to have the text ON the header image for this theme, I would rather it be above it. I should probably change the text color to something other than red, but I just left it as the default. Too lazy to bother.

Anyway, this is my blog.

2011 Edit:
Oh yeah, looking at this 2 years later and it still looks terrible. I wonder if I should change it or not. I’d have to stop being lazy and actually figure out how to do so…
